Srinagar, Jul 4 - Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday expressed his gratitude to the Union government for its decision to withdraw the proposed closure plan for Srinagar Airport. This decision comes after a concerted effort by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to advocate against the closure, which had raised concerns about its potential impact on travelers and the local economy.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Abdullah thanked Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu for their responsiveness to the state's request. He noted that the proposed closure had created significant inconvenience for regular travelers, especially during the busy tourist season.

Abdullah stated, "The decision to suspend the airport closure order is a welcome relief for not just the travelers but also for the tourism sector, which is crucial for our economy. We are thankful to the Centre for understanding the implications of such a closure and acting in favor of the people of Jammu and Kashmir."

The initial plan for the airport's closure raised alarms among stakeholders in the tourism industry, with many fearing a negative impact on visitor numbers during peak travel times. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of maintaining connectivity to support the region's economic recovery post-pandemic.

Local tourism operators expressed their appreciation for the government's decision, stating that Srinagar Airport serves as a vital link for travelers from across the country and beyond. The airport's operational status is essential for promoting the scenic beauty and cultural richness of Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the announcement, many in the region have voiced hopes that this decision signifies a more collaborative approach between the state and central governments in addressing local issues. Abdullah’s acknowledgment of the ministers’ actions reflects a growing trend of cooperation aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents in Jammu and Kashmir.

The resolution of the airport closure issue is expected to bolster confidence among tourists and encourage travel to the area, which has seen a resurgence of interest following the lifting of pandemic restrictions. Abdullah's statements underscore a commitment to ensuring the prosperity and connectivity of Jammu and Kashmir.
