In a significant advancement for the ambitious Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train Project, India's largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) commenced its excavation on Sunday from the Vikhroli shaft in Mumbai. This milestone marks a pivotal moment in the development of the much-anticipated high-speed rail corridor, which is designed to drastically reduce travel times between the two major cities.

The TBM will be employed to construct a 6-kilometer-long single-tube tunnel that is intended to accommodate both the up and down tracks of the bullet train. This section is part of the overall 21-kilometer-long underground tunnel portion of the project, which features a total of 16 kilometers being built using tunnel boring machines. The remaining 5 kilometers of tunnel have already been completed utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).

Officials have expressed optimism about the TBM's capabilities, as it represents a significant technological achievement in India's infrastructure development. The machine is expected to navigate through the complex geological formations between Sawli (Ghansoli) and the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), where urban challenges necessitate advanced tunneling techniques.
