India will play host to the BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies Meeting in Guwahati, Assam, on July 6 and 7, 2023. This significant event aims to bring together senior officials from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to discuss strategies and policies in the fight against drug trafficking and associated transnational crimes.

The meeting is organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs as part of India’s chairmanship of BRICS for the year 2026. The two-day event underscores India's commitment to addressing the growing challenges posed by drug abuse and trafficking.

Key issues on the agenda include the combat against synthetic drugs, a rising concern in global drug markets, and the prevention of diversion of precursor chemicals used in drug production. Additionally, the meeting will focus on enhancing intelligence sharing and improving operational coordination among the member countries.

In light of the increasing sophistication of drug trafficking networks, officials stress the necessity of robust collaboration. “Our unified efforts can significantly contribute to dismantling the intricate web of drug trafficking,” said a senior NCB official, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation.

The event will provide a platform for member states to share best practices and innovative approaches to combat the evolving drug menace. Attendees are expected to engage in fruitful discussions that could lead to actionable commitments and enhanced collaboration in the fight against narcotics.

As global drug trafficking continues to escalate, the outcomes of this meeting are anticipated to play a crucial role in shaping future policies and collaborative frameworks among BRICS nations. The commitment to a collective approach is seen as vital for effectively tackling the challenges posed by drug-related crimes.
