India's passport has been ranked 125th in the Global Passport Index (GPI) for 2026, as reported by Global Citizen Solutions (GCS). This marks a slight decline from the previous year's ranking of 124th, illustrating the challenges Indian passport holders face in terms of global mobility.

Despite this setback in passport ranking, there is a silver lining as India has improved its quality of living score. This duality raises questions about how well the country is progressing in terms of global acceptance versus domestic quality of life.

Over the past five years, the Indian passport has seen a net improvement of two positions, indicating a gradual, albeit slow, enhancement in its global standing. However, the recent drop suggests that the pace of improvement may not be sufficient to keep up with other nations making significant strides.

The GPI, which evaluates passports based on the number of countries holders can visit without a visa, reflects the geopolitical landscape and diplomatic relations that play a crucial role in global mobility. Countries with stronger economies and better diplomatic ties often rank higher, and India’s decline may signal a need for improved international relations.

In light of this information, experts suggest that enhancing diplomatic ties and addressing visa restrictions could be vital for India to bolster its passport ranking. Commenting on the findings, an analyst from GCS stated, "While improvements in living conditions are encouraging, they must be complemented by enhanced global mobility to truly reflect a nation's progress on the world stage."

As India grapples with the implications of its passport ranking, stakeholders are urged to focus on creating strategic partnerships and agreements that will enhance international travel for Indian citizens, thereby potentially reversing this downward trend in the future.
