Mumbai is bracing for severe weather conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Thane and Palghar. This warning comes in response to the development of a well-marked Low-Pressure Area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, which is set to keep the monsoon in an active phase over Central India for the coming days.

The IMD forecasts intense spells of rainfall in isolated areas within the region, with extremely heavy rainfall anticipated particularly from July 4 to July 7. Areas along the Konkan coast and parts of Gujarat are expected to receive the brunt of the downpour, with warnings of extraordinary rainfall levels that could disrupt daily life.

According to IMD officials, the active monsoon is not limited to Mumbai alone. Madhya Maharashtra is also on alert for heavy rains between July 4 and 6, while regions in Saurashtra and parts of Odisha could see significant rainfall on July 4. The IMD has advised residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard against potential flooding.

“The monsoon's intensity is likely to increase further due to the prevailing low-pressure system,” stated an IMD spokesperson. “While we are preparing for heavy rain, we urge citizens to stay indoors during the most intense weather and report any emergencies swiftly.”

The authorities have ramped up their preparedness in anticipation of the heavy rains, with local agencies on standby to address any incidents that may arise from flooding or landslides. The Mumbai civic body has also alerted its disaster management teams to ensure swift response capabilities in impacted areas.
