UNNAO: The first monsoon rains have wreaked havoc on infrastructure in Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh, as a section of the road connecting the Kanpur-Lucknow National Highway to the Ganga Expressway suffered a collapse. Officials reported that approximately seven meters of the road near Bashiratganj in the Sonik area gave way after heavy rainfall washed away the soil beneath it.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has prompted immediate repair work by the local authorities. The cave-in has raised alarm about the integrity of the road infrastructure, particularly as it serves as a crucial link to the Ganga Expressway, an important route for local and interstate traffic.

Eyewitness accounts from local residents have highlighted concerns regarding the quality of construction and maintenance of the road. Many have claimed that proper slope protection and soil-retention measures were not implemented as per the prescribed standards, which could have mitigated the impact of the heavy rains.

Officials have begun assessing the damage and are working towards restoring the link road to ensure safe passage for commuters. The collapse has not only affected the flow of traffic but has also raised questions about the preparedness of infrastructure to handle monsoon challenges.

A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration over the situation, stating, “We have repeatedly raised our concerns about the road’s condition, but no adequate action has been taken until now. This could have been prevented with proper planning.”

As the monsoon season progresses, authorities are urged to take necessary precautions to safeguard vital roads and infrastructure. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in road safety during extreme weather conditions, emphasizing the need for better engineering standards and maintenance practices.
